I counsel you to take a book, any book.* Take the books inscribed by the Roerichs.1 Take the books of this activity. There are precious pearls of wisdom that could turn your life around if you should open the books and read them.
It is well to have an ongoing relationship with a spiritual book and the mentors who have delivered it, whereby in those lines that you read, in those teachings you receive, you are reminded again and again that the hours and the days are the opportunity of time and space to regain what you have lost and to come up higher and beyond that level of adeptship that you had attained to prior to your compromising yourself in this way or that.
So know, beloved, as you read perhaps The Mahatma Letters2 and understand the sternness of some of us as we have dealt with humankind and various individuals who attempt to destroy our efforts, there is at times a certain gruffness in the masters. Whereas here, if you have any gruffness from anyone who happens to be over you, you are immediately challenging that one: “How dare that one come to me and tell me this or that! Who does he think he is?” et cetera, et cetera.
Beloved ones, you must know that your pride must regularly be tested to see whether it is still there! You must know whether you retain personal pride by how you react to remarks that you consider to be disrespectful or challenging or demeaning.
Blessed ones, it is never more important, than when your pride is piqued, for you to recognize how far you truly have to go on the Path. If you can be offended by anyone who is over you or beneath you, if you are ready to throw in the towel because someone has in some way disgraced you—I say, consider whether or not you are ready for a direct relationship with one of those of us who are the ascended masters.
I can assure you, beloved, that the ascended masters today take on very few, if any, chelas—the reason being that we must use all of our grants and dispensations to help the larger body of disciples on the Path rather than lose those dispensations because we have, in a sense, plighted our troth to one who has not been true to us in the sense of being wife. For every chela is the wife of the ascended master.
Understand, beloved, that it is important that you have a sense of co-measurement of what the Great White Brotherhood is truly all about and what all these things are about, these ins and outs of fussing about this and fussing about that because you simply do not like the way you are being treated. I counsel you on this because pride will surely put great distance between you and myself, for the Holy Spirit will not dispense its gifts to those who yet have pride. For how much more proud shall they become when they have spiritual gifts? And thus, one cannot even calculate how high individuals think they have come when they think they have spiritual gifts (which they do not have) and therefore consider that they are mighty above all others and look down upon them.
I am grateful that there is less of a demonstration of that human pride here than there is in other circles where individuals do not have the calls to Astrea, the dweller call or the violet flame.3 But I tell you, beloved, [pride] is the source of the fall that comes. And I say, you have known the expression that “pride goeth before the fall.” See that you do not fall and then remember and realize that it was your pride that tripped you.4
I do not say that you should not be bold before the world yet humble before your God. But I ask you to remember that we can only go so far with you when you have mapped out in your consciousness and have such a set grid around you of what you think the Path is, what you think the Guru-chela relationship is and therefore almost put the messenger in a position of apologizing to you while correcting you. This need not be and it ought not to be, but because of your ignorance, that is where the matter rests many times.
Therefore, a word to the wise ought to be sufficient. You should expect the unexpected, expect to be rebuked when you least expect it because, of course, beloved, you are well-meaning and if you knew better, you would do better. And the only time you need correction is when you think you are doing the right thing and you are doing the wrong thing.
And then we come along and put the messenger in a certain situation where we know you are going to be. And, behold, there you are and there she is, and there she gives you that little bit of advice, that little bit of encouragement, that little bit of a rebuke or a strong one that you might set your head on straight again, as though you had just had a chiropractic treatment from us. And off you go and you are seeing things straight again for a while, until you step into the hole of that human karma which comes up as fast as you can deal with it.
And those who come into the court* regularly and come at the turning of the dawn of the day and do their violet flame decrees and do their calls, beloved ones, they are accelerating and balancing karma with their prayers, along with their work. Do not neglect [this] if you want to be an adept.
If you don’t want to be an adept, if you want to be [only] a worker and perhaps not even a chela on the Path, well, that is your choice. But we are here and as the sun rises daily, so we come daily. But, beloved ones, there have been periods in history when the sun did not rise and when the adepts were all in nirvana and mankind were left alone to themselves. And these have been dark ages that were very, very, very dark.
Thus, you are here; we are here. My message to you is: Let us make the most of it! We are in this together. We will give you our very best.
I ask you, will you give us your very best? [Audience responds: “Yes!”]
That is all we ask, beloved. That is all we ask [you]—to give your very best and then receive the reward again and again of our best. We cannot ask of you more, but we ask you this.
So, beloved, I bow before you. I bow before the light within you. And I look forward to increasing that fire as you come to understand what it truly means to be in a community founded by the adepts, to be in a community where we are present and move among you. I think if you give some greater consideration to the readings and the history of the initiates of past ages and what they went through to attain, you will gain a new sense of co-measurement of your own place on the Path.
I tell you, we have profound respect for your being when considering that being from where you stand, all the way back to the Great Central Sun. For the potential for your Godhood is there, and most of you have some portion of that Godhood that you function with daily. That portion that you have seized, that you have made your own, that you have turned to your own self-mastery—that is the lodestone of your being.
And we add to that ring upon ring of initiation, showing that you have that direct insight and that sternness of intensity of motive to achieve, as well as the freedom of joy and happiness as you laugh and play and sing and dance but never leave the point of the centeredness of God, the alertness of the watchman upon the wall.
I am the Maha Chohan. We draw nigh, very close to you.
Therefore, as I have said, make the most of it!
[33-second standing ovation]

** I.e., King Arthur’s Court at the Inner Retreat.
[Mark L. Prophet and Elizabeth Clare Prophet, in their book Climb the Highest Mountain: The Path of the Higher Self, teach that] the Maha Chohan has referred to the Holy Spirit as the great unifying coordinator who, “like unto a mighty weaver of old, weaves a seamless garment of ascended master light and love. The shuttle of God’s attention upon man drives forth radiant beams of descending light, scintillating fragments of purity and happiness, toward earth and into the hearts of his children, whilst the tender risings of men’s hopes, aspirations, invocations and calls for assistance do pursue the Deity in his mighty haven of cosmic purity....
“As a tiny seed of light, the Holy Spirit enters into the heart of the earth, into the density of matter, that it might expand throughout the cells of form and being, of thought and perception to become a gnosis and an effulgence in the cup of consciousness. This Holy Grail of immortal substance may be unrecognized by many who pass by, but to many others it will be perceived gleaming from behind the veil. Shedding the light of that divine knowing that transcends mortal conception and is the renewing freshness of eternity’s morn, it vitalizes each moment with the God-happiness that man cognizes through infinite perceptions cast as fragments into the chalice of his own consciousness” [pp. 386-87]....
The Maha Chohan ministers to every person on earth as we enter this world and as we exit it. At the moment of that birth, he is present to breathe the breath of life into the body and to ignite the threefold flame that is lowered into manifestation in the secret chamber of the heart.
The Maha Chohan also attends at the transition called death, when he comes to withdraw the flame of life and to withdraw the holy breath. The flame, or divine spark, returns to the Holy Christ Self, and the soul, clothed in the etheric body, also returns to the level of the Holy Christ Self. Similarly, he will minister to you at every crossroad in life, if you will but pause for a moment when making decisions, think of the Holy Spirit and simply say the mantra, “Come, Holy Spirit, enlighten me.”

This dictation by the Maha Chohan was delivered by the Messenger of the Great White Brotherhood Elizabeth Clare Prophet on Monday, October 11, 1993, during the seven-day conference Prayer Vigil to Restore the T’ai Chi of Elemental Life, held October 6 through 11, 1993, at the Royal Teton Ranch, Park County, Montana.
1. Nicholas Roerich and his wife, Helena, served during the early twentieth century as amanuenses for the ascended masters El Morya and Lord Maitreya. Nicholas ascended at the conclusion of that lifetime. The Roerich’s books, the Agni Yoga Series, are published by the Agni Yoga Society, which they founded in 1920. El Morya’s and Kuthumi’s letters to their students in the Theosophical movement are published in The Mahatma Letters, delivered between 1880 and 1884 to A. P. Sinnett, a disciple in the Theosophical Society.

4. The saying “Pride goeth before a fall” is adapted from Proverbs 16:18: “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” According to the messenger, pride may manifest in many ways, including any of these behaviors:
