The Motive of the Path: Love of God

In the most holy flame of love, I bear witness that in the humility of your soul you can attain. I have never considered myself an extraordinary soul, coming as I have come out from among you.¹ I count you my brothers and sisters of light.

One day I determined that the current of light entering my heart was the extraordinary element of Being. And that pressure upon my heart and soul would not leave me. It was a disturbance. It was a questioning and a wondering as to the sorrow and the dying and the unreality of life upon earth. You know, my beloved, the passion that God alone can place within our hearts, the passion that enabled me to leave palace and wife and newborn son and all of these opportunities of earth. Surely you must understand that this was not a selfish act. This was the LORD God in the person of the Ancient of Days² who placed within me the gentle acceleration of his own consciousness. To it I responded.

Beloved ones, there was no other course. The love of God had entered my soul. I would be eternally dissatisfied until I would know the Source of that energy. It is recorded that for six years I remained an ascetic pursuing all manner of disciplines of the flesh and the mind. But as you have come to know, these of themselves are of no avail. For neither the body nor the mind is the vessel of the LORD God, but the flaming altar of the heart, the threefold flame—this is all within you that can contain his living Spirit.

Therefore, emaciated, I left those monks under their stern criticism and I went forth in the land of the living to know the living God. I was fed, for I was anhungered,* and because I was fed my body endured and I could sit under the Bo tree of my own God Presence I AM. And I could ascend the great spiral of being almost as you would trip lightly up a spiral staircase unto the plane of the Lord Christ who instructed me, lo, those seven days.

And again I descended and then ascended for the completion of the seven-times-seven³ and the remainder was within the Holy of Holies of my own God Presence in the very center of that forcefield of Alpha and Omega that is called the “nirvanic increment of light.”

Beloved ones, I am one of you and the life that I had lived before I entered the Path was not very different from the lives that many of you have led. In truth, I had had a number of incarnations of the pursuit of God—but then, you have also. Do you realize, then, from the hour of my decision until the hour of the opening of the door, those six years were the cycles of the cosmic clock⁴ required of my life to prepare for my meeting with the Mother of the World to receive her wisdom by the power of the Trinity.

The lesson I would bring to you is that no man or woman may come unto the fullness of the Trinity of life without passing under the discipline of the law of the Woman clothed in the Sun⁵ who appears in every age to decipher the great cosmic code of science of Being. Count not, then, six years of chelaship of the most intense nature. Count not twelve or more, for, beloved, whatever it takes, you may come to that very place that I came to. Remember this—that indeed our God is no respecter of persons.

Therefore, O children of the Sun, I urge you, I counsel you that when you make a decision to know Reality, do not allow yourselves to be fooled that by a half-hearted attempt somehow you will suddenly come into the great wisdom of the ages. I would bring to your mind a case in point, and many cases, of individuals within this activity and others through the ages who have come and served even an entire lifetime with the ulterior motive of salvation.

Understand what I am saying. The motive of the Path can only be one. It is this: Love of God. Love of God. Love of God in every manifestation, in every being, in every life, in every plane of consciousness. That is all that is required, beloved ones.

But if you come with the ambition of salvation and say, “Now God has promised to give me salvation if I do this and this and this,” and, if you bargain with God and you will say, “LORD, I have done this and this and this. Now give me my salvation,” you will have missed the point of the integration of the spirals of your being with a cosmos.

See, then, that I have noted many who have served with diligence, but because of impurity of motive they have held back the beauty of the flow of love, a tenderness, a freedom, an all-flowing. And therefore they have arrived at the conclusion not of one but of many rounds of service, and Sanat Kumara has declared unto them, “Go back, my child. Go back again and discover the meaning of love.”

Love truly is the fulfillment of the Law. It is the only fulfillment. There is no other way to fulfill the Law, and therefore I counsel you, study to know the meaning of love. Search all that we have given you, all that we have spoken on that very gentle but powerful magnitude of light that comes forth at once as the absolute judgment and on the other hand as the absolute mercy of the LORD God himself.

To know the spectrum of love, beloved ones, is to know God in the fullest dimensions of Being. Love, then, love to the uttermost and you will find all of the stops open in your life and such a great floodtide of energy and ability to move in cosmic spheres, to render practical service, to become well qualified in whatever field you are called.

O my beloved, see and understand that you also could have come with me five hundred years before the birth of Christ, and you rather than I today could be known as the Lord of the World.⁶ Now it is twenty-five hundred years that have passed. Some of you have been idling in that decision. Some of you are under the illusion that you have made that decision and therefore know not why you do not have greater freedom in all areas of your life, why things don't simply seem to work for you, why you toil and toil by the sweat of your brow and end up with nothing to show for it at the end of a month or a year, while others move rapidly to those positions of import in our cause. It is very simple, beloved ones. You have not understood the most gracious, magnanimous love of the Ancient of Days, whose flame within you in this very hour is scarcely perceived, adored, appreciated.

I leave you with the impact of love. I leave you with the thoughtfulness of your own introspection and your communion, and I tell you this one truth: For of a verity, if you will incline your ear and set your life to the disciplines which we have shown you, you will come to know in our messenger the fullness of our embodied self. Do not misunderstand or miscalculate or misrepresent the little revolutionary that stands before you.

The leaping of the fire is upon you. Know, then, that the burning love of her heart is my heart, that as you see and know that love, you know myself. Now the initiation that I give to you is to know yourself as myself, even as this one does know herself as my very own. This, beloved, is the key of ever lasting love, everlasting life, everlasting victory.

So in the hours and days and weeks ahead, ponder. Ponder how is the chalice of your heart, whether great enough to be that love. And if not, expand it. Expand it. Expand it.

In the name of love, I remain within your heart, waiting for your coming in love.

Sanat Kumara held the office of Lord of the World (referred to as “God of the Earth” in Rev. 11:4) until January 1, 1956, when his most capable disciple Gautama Buddha assumed the position, having enough momentum to hold the balance for the planet and focus of the threefold flame. (Sanat Kumara is now Regent Lord of the World.) At inner levels, Gautama sustains the threefold flame of life, the divine spark, for all children of God on earth. Speaking of the great service Gautama renders to all life in his office as Lord of the World, Maitreya said on January 1, 1986: “The Lord of the World does sustain the threefold flame in the evolutions of earth by a filigree light extending from his heart.” See The Masters and Their Retreats, pp. 113-14.
