One day I was counseling a particular individual, whose needs I had been meditating on for some time, and this chela brought up the issue of the friend. And I have seen that on the inner, this chela (having been able to navigate for a long time on the intellect and psychic ability) has very little Christ consciousness that is realized in the flesh as attainment, as the mind that works in him on a day-to-day basis, as the mind that is the present mind.
So I said, “Why is this so?” And then El Morya showed me that above the head of this person—as he is standing, let us say, in the electronic belt, in the chamber of his being—it’s like the roof of a cave. It’s like dark solid rock, and that stands between him and his Holy Christ Self.
So the cave is hollowed out. The cave is comfortable. It’s a place of accommodation, a place one can live. It’s as if the cave hollowed out represents the world, getting along just fine down here.
Now comes the day of reckoning. By not having developed the Christ mind, here is this solid rock of human creation, karma, and the dweller. And this individual is going to have to take picks, axes, dynamite, everything he can think of to blast this granite over his head to get through that electronic belt to the secret chamber of the heart, knowing that on the other side of it is the true Friend with a capital F, the true Twin Flame with a capital T F, the true brother and sister on the Path.
If we cannot get to that place of deciding that we are going to go through this, because of psychological hang-ups, then we may need the assistance of a counselor who is trained in psychology and trained by me in counseling. And there are such people on my staff who have had long years of experience, who have long been counseled by me and disciplined by me, and who also have their degrees and are capable of understanding (as Saint John of the Cross would understand) where people are on the Path and what they are going through.
It’s not just a question of decreeing and attending services. It’s a question of initiation and of understanding where you are and that you need the absolute oneness of chelaship with an ascended master and my intercession when necessary.
The call is necessary. The decrees are necessary. But some people do have blocks because of various lines of the clock— their fears, their resentments, their this, their that. Those things come into play. But they can’t see that. And so they go round and round and round, and they can never get past a certain level of their psychology.
One of the reasons you can’t get past that level is because you don’t understand it objectively. And two ways you can do this are by studying your astrological charts and counseling with a qualified ministerial counselor. This should be someone who has a background in counseling and is able to understand the signs.
People with Ph. D.’s have come to me to offer counseling for my staff and I have not allowed them to do so because they weren’t chelas first. They didn’t have years of experience of working under me and seeing how I analyze step-by-step and problem-by-problem those issues that do come to me.
So when you are trying to overcome psychological blocks, astrology and counseling help, all of the path of the teaching helps, and attending services helps also. But most of you are not short on decrees. You’re not short on services. If by doing your decrees, you could get to the kingdom and tremendously please El Morya, I am sure you have already done so.
But the necessity is for consciously understanding the Path, engaging in it and fighting for it on a daily basis. A certain amount of fire has to be put forth every day, just as a tiny baby a few weeks old puts forth all of the strength of his little body, of his little eight or ten pounds, to go one inch, three inches on his track.
If you could see these babies—how heroic they are, how absolutely determined, how absolutely God-motivated, how happy they are when they achieve it and their achievement is acknowledged by their parents, and how peacefully they sleep the peace of having fought a good fight and won—you would know that this is the tonic and the answer for yourself.
There is no way that this battle is going to be won without engaging all of your forces. There is no way it’s going to be won if you are not God-taught and illumined and do not receive the transfer of the Holy Spirit once a week as you attend the Sunday service.
The conclusion of the matter is, then, that the goal of all that you do is to become the Christ. It’s the fifth of the steps of initiation under the living Word. And a part of these steps is fulfilled by all of us daily. You are being a friend to the master daily. You are being a brother to him, and you are being a Christ daily, measure by measure.
When the official level of the Christ is granted to you, it is because of all other considerations of levels of karma, constancy, balancing of various past situations of faithlessness or absence of trust. Many things must take place at inner levels before you are officially on the level of the Christ. And no one will raise you up a single rung of the ladder if you are not prepared to slay the dweller on the planet, the false hierarchy of anti-Christ that opposes you on that level.
That is why Kuan Yin has said, “I’ll give you any gift you ask for as long as you can deal with the opposition to that gift, as long as you can hold your harmony and the light.” What we pray to Kuan Yin for we have to be able to hold on to.
To seek counsel and to seek and understand good relationships throughout this community, we should go back to the understanding of the rule of order of Saint Francis and Saint Clare,1 of which we consider ourselves a part, whether married or single. And this is a communion with fellow brothers and sisters on the Path, a sense of oneness and striving together as well as a sense of our aloneness. It is being a good friend to others, supporting them in their burdens, but not becoming the solution to another person’s problem, another person’s need for intimacy. We may go overboard with such things when we fail to affiliate ourselves with a master.
Perhaps you have five masters who are important to you—El Morya, Saint Germain, Mother Mary, Kuan Yin, Archangel Michael. You name the ones that you feel close to. It is good to take one of those masters and to understand that although you are supported by many, there is one master who is looking over you in a special way. We’ve always said that that master is El Morya and that we must look to him.
When you visualize that one, you have pictures of that one, you write to that one and you sense the inner devotion that “I am here and I am serving because I love you and I know you are helping me,” that master becomes extremely real. And there is profound consolation and no longer a sense of aloneness. It’s a development by trust, and you supply the trust because you have to supply the connection—as in a mantra, like the “Hail Mary,” over which the light descends. That is what the principle of mantras and prayers is about. You clear the path and the light descends.
And so, it is to this master that you tell your secrets, the intimate musings of your heart, and you seek to develop a tie. It is a tie that is sustained by your decrees and devotion but also by your communication. If you stop talking to your friends, you lose touch, right? You kind of drift away. A friendship needs nourishing.
This tie can be developed before you cut through that roof of the cave, that granite. This tie is a figure-eight flow of sponsorship that the Great White Brotherhood has given to us as communicants and as Keepers of the Flame. You can have this tie even before you have scarcely balanced any karma. It is a tie of bhakti yoga, of devotion, of service. It is a tie of chelaship. It is a tie of being the friend and the brother. It is a tie of pursuing the embodiment of the Christ.
From student to chela to friend to brother, we can pursue our Christhood. And what it takes, El Morya says, is striving. He describes the chela as “one striving on the Path, one who is dedicated to make his temple the temple of the living God, and of the Father, the mighty I AM Presence, and of the Son descending.” And he goes on to explain:
The chela is the striving one.
Thus, we consider all who defend our teaching and our messenger and who are faithful in the service we have outlined to be a part of that level and that hierarchy. The office waits and you may so qualify yourself by intense calls to the violet flame and the will of God and the request that you have revealed to you what are those things which must shortly be passed into the flame for you to know the true protection of the mantle of chela.
Blessed ones, the chela is striving on the path of personal Christhood. And when that Christhood is bestowed, then he wears the mantle not only of the chela or disciple but also of his own Holy Christ Self.
The chela, before becoming that Shepherd, does become—on occasion, from time to time, and often—the vessel of his Christ Self. By and by, as this becomes a perpetual vigil of the hours, the mantle descends and the Christ does not leave that one, even if that one may temporarily lose his balance or become out of alignment.
You see, an office, once granted by the LORD God, is not withdrawn as one would snatch from you a cape, then drop it again, then snatch it again. This is not the way of the Great White Brotherhood. When we see fit to bestow the mantle of chela, we stand by that chela.
Thus, not all who are students of ours do we count as chelas. For a chela is someone with whom we share our very life and breath. Thus, a relationship of trust must be established.
In the same manner, the one who has been seen consistently to strive to outpicture that Christhood does eventually, by initiation of Maitreya and Jesus and his own Christ Self, attain to a certain equilibrium in the manifestation of Christhood—not giving us the ups and downs of inconstancy, not being here one day and there another.
Thus, the passing of initiation in each office is required. And thus, you see that the Christed ones must also be equal to the task of bearing that Christ light.
Beloved hearts, this office of Christ formerly occupied by your messengers and still occupied by your messengers is the true assignment of yourselves. You, the direct initiates of our call, are expected not to remain chelas forever—forever seeking the truth but never coming to the knowledge of that truth,2 to borrow a phrase from the apostle.
Chelaship may be comfortable because the chela may yet depend upon the Christed One or the master. I admonish you that those who have our direct word and blessing must strive not only to rise but to pull down the full power of the office of Christhood.3
